John Akins is an active writer and poet, based in Washington State. This website is designed to showcase his work, to give you some idea of his writing style, his themes and the ideas he explores through his work. It contains a number of extracts of his writing. John's writing is influenced by his combat experience in the US Marine Corps during the Vietnam war. John joined the US marines in 1967 and was immediately shipped off for a 13 month tour as an infantry rifleman. He explores in intense and vivid detail, what really went on in the jungles of Vietnam.

His riveting and vivid writing style and his, at times, haunting and nightmarish poetry remain essential reading today for people of all walks of life. As a combat marine, he takes the reader by the hand into up-close war fighting and its affects on the human psyche. Combat is a one-way door.

Our claim is miles of sugar sand
on the South China Sea.
There are no beach chairs, no umbrellas, no staff.
We sip nothing, stare down the surf.
